According to the Honolulu Advertiser, the search for a missing California man who disappeared while surfing at Laniakea Beach, HI has been called off. Fire Captain Terry Seelig said, “We feel we’ve done everything we can,” after having searched for the man by air, land, and sea.

The man went missing on Tuesday evening while surfing at Laniakea Beach. According to a KHON2 report, the man had no ocean experience and was attempting to surf in “strong trade winds.” Lifeguards noticed the “novice surfer” and attempted to help him but were unable to locate him when they got out in the water. The following morning, the crew of a fire search helicopter spotted what appeared to be a body and “three large tiger sharks exhibiting aggressive behavior.” Recovery crews were unable to retrieve the body due to the presence of the sharks and lost sight of the body soon after.

Shark warning signs had been posted at the beach after the tiger sharks had been spotted but were removed on Thursday (March 11), due to no recent shark sightings, according to the Honolulu Advertiser report.

While tiger sharks were seen around what is believed to be the missing man’s body, there is currently no evidence to suggest that sharks were involved in the man’s initial disappearance. According to a KITV video report, the man’s surfboard washed up on the beach after he disappeared in the “windy and rough conditions.”

According to KITV, the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii was assisting the victim’s family, following the tragedy.
